How You Can Train a Bullmastiff
- 1). Train your bullmastiff while he is still a pup. Doing so will afford you more control over the dog, than training him even when he is half his adult size. Training begins by introducing him to the collar and leash. It is important that he learn who is in control from the start. Do not chase the dog to put on the leash and collar. Firmly call the dog to you near the door; only then should you put it on. Give him a doggy treat only when he comes to you and allows you to put on the collar and leash.
- 2). Step outside the door first; never allow your bullmastiff to go out the door before you do. It is very important you establish up front your own confidence and assurance in handling your bullmastiff. He must also understand where he falls into the pack. Not only should you follow these instructions when walking the dog, the rest of the family must also make sure they are out the door first.
- 3). Walk your bullmastiff by holding a short leash so that he must walk beside you. Do not let him run ahead and pull you along. If he attempts to run ahead or lunge at another person or animal, give the leash a gentle tug to restrain him and give him a firm "No!" Do not allow your bullmastiff to relieve himself until your take him to a spot where you want him to do so. If he attempts to stop, tug the lease gently, keep walking and give a firm command "Come!" When walking, if you want to stop, do so and give the firm command "Heel!" while giving a gentle tug on the leash.
- 4). Give your bullmastiff some basic obedience training while walking him on the leash. The leash and collar provide you better control and will help focus your dog's attention. Teach him to sit by gently pulling up on the leash, pushing down on his hind end and giving the command "Sit!" You can also teach him to lay down by pulling down on the leash while he is sitting and gently pulling his front legs out from under him, guiding him to the ground. Use the command "Lay Down." Always make sure you use the same word or phrase for each command you teach your bullmastiff and always give the command using the same even and firm tone of voice. Each time your dog executes a command correctly, give him a treat and praise him.
- 5). Catch your bullmastiff in the act when you want to curb bad behavior. Never attempt to punish him after the fact; he won't understand and you will just confuse him. When you catch him exhibiting bad behavior such as chewing on the sofa, give him a sharp "No!" and remove him from the sofa. Never hit the dog or become aggressive toward him. This only serves to teach him how to become aggressive.
