How to Install the Tachometer on a Yamaha Motorcycle
- 1). Establish the location of the tachometer at the handlebars or the instrument cluster. Depending on the model and style of the unit, a bracket with compression bolts or instrument gauge clips are used to mount the tachometer.
- 2). Mount the tachometer with bracket by positioning the bracket on the handlebars. Hold the tachometer with one hand and tighten the compression bolts clockwise with an Allen wrench. Mount the tachometer in the instrument cluster using the provided clips.
- 3). Locate the threaded tachometer gear fitting at the front of the engine crankcase. Thread the tachometer cable fitting onto the gear fitting clockwise by hand. The cable fitting is tightened once the installation is complete.
- 4). Route the tachometer cable from the crankcase fitting to the back of the tachometer. Route the cable in a way that it can be secured at the front tube of the motorcycle frame to avoid damage from engine heat.
- 5). Make gentle bends as you route the cable to prevent crimping or pulling too tight when the handlebars are turned. Attach the cable to the upper tube of the frame with the provided cable stay or a nylon tie.
- 6). Connect the upper end of the tachometer cable to the back of the gauge by threading it into the gauge clockwise by hand. Turn the handlebars fully each way to make sure the cable does not crimp or pull too tight. Remove the cable stay or nylon tie and reposition the cable if necessary.
- 7). Connect the tachometer wiring clip to the existing snap-in connector at the handlebars or instrument cluster. Refer to the service manual for wiring connections where a snap-in connector is not used. Typical connections include a red or gray voltage wire and a black or green ground wire. Each wire has a ring connector that slides onto a threaded post and is secured using a brass washer and nut. Tighten the nuts clockwise with a metric open-end wrench.
- 8). Turn the motorcycle ignition on. The LED reading should appear within a few seconds. Turn the headlight on. The tachometer convenience light should illuminate immediately. Turn the headlight and ignition off.
- 9). Tighten the threaded fittings at each end of the tachometer cable clockwise with pliers. A shop rag can be used to prevent scratching the fittings when tightening with pliers.
