Definition:
First line therapy is the first type of treatment used against your leukemia or lymphoma. It is usually the one that has the greatest potential to provide you with the best outcome. It is a therapy that has been proven in a clinical trial setting, and is widely accepted as the standard of care for a particular type and stage of cancer.
First line therapy may also be referred to as “induction therapy.” The goal of first line therapy is to get the cancer into remission.
First line therapy is effective at decreasing the cancer in your body, then you may receive additional treatment to kill any remaining cancer cells.
In the treatment of leukemia and lymphoma, first line therapy commonly consists of chemotherapy, a combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, or biologic therapy.
Also Known As: Induction therapy, initial therapy, primary therapy
