HOW TO USE REAL LIFE EXPERIENCE AS THE BASIS OF YOUR WRITING

I suppose many people who decide to write a fictional story based on real life experiences do so because they feel that the things happening to them shouldn't happen in real life.  It's a good idea to just focus on the facts of the story and embellish it into a fictional story.

The past has shown us that some of the greatest stories arrive to writers very unexpectedly and with very little effort.  A good writing idea may only consist of one sentence, or even just a word.

Assuming your intention is not to write a book or screenplay specifically about that person, the first thing you need to do is change the characters name.  It may be beneficial to change the "personality" of your character to one other than the person your story is based on.  Most likely you can find a personality type for this role that can make your story much richer, interesting, and exciting.  And don't forget to change any of the big details that someone who knows you might recognize and know exactly who you based your story on.  This can cause many negative legal ramifications down the line, especially if your book or movie is very successful.

Since real life doesn't always get across the same meaningful message you can portray in a book, it will help for you to remember that you are, in fact, writing a story so feel free to embellish in order to create a more entertaining character and storyline.

Drama, of course, is the key ingredient to any good story so make sure that you add plenty of that.

Here are some points you should consider before writing about real life events:
  • How closely should my story resemble real life?
  • Will the events I am using, and embellishing upon make a good story?
  • Will people who know me, or know the person I am writing about read this story?
  • If so, what might the ramifications be?
  • What perspective should I write my story from?
  • Should I change every ones names?
  • Would my story be better if I based it strictly on fictional characters?

When you create a fictional story it is imperative that the dialogue sound real, even if it never actually took place.  One of the biggest perks of writing is that you can create any character you want and that character can do anything you want them to do.

Details and realism are important factors when turning a real life experience into fiction.  The story does not need to be accurate, but it does need to portray the scenes in factual manners.

One thing to consider is that writing from experience goes faster.
