Hemorrhoids are the medical name for a condition characterized by swollen veins in the anal canal.
Hemorrhoids can be external when the swollen veins are visible outside the anal canal or internal when the swollen veins are inside the anal canal and are invisible.
Hemorrhoids are caused by too much pressure on the veins of the pelvic and rectal areas.
Straining while passing stools, diarrhea, constipation, pregnancy, being overweight are some of the common risk factors for hemorrhoids.
The most common symptoms of hemorrhoids include bleeding while passing stools, pain (more so when the veins get thrombosed), itching, and mucus discharge.
Most cases of hemorrhoids are simple enough to warrant home remedies or treatments but some might need expert review as they may need surgery which is called hemorrhoidectomy.
In this article I will explain what you can do at home in order to prevent simple cases of hemorrhoids from getting worse.
1.
Avoid making the hemorrhoids worse: After bowel movements blot the anus with a wet wipe or toilet paper soaked in a cleansing agent.
Avoid rubbing the anal area.
After bowel movements you can rinse off in the shower or a bidet.
Avoid using soaps with perfumes or dyes.
2.
To relieve pain and itching: A non-prescription medicine like Aspirin or Paracetamol can help you deal with pain.
Apply ice packs for 10 minutes followed by a warm compress for another ten minutes.
Repeat this as often as you can in a day.
You can even fill the bathtub with warm water just enough to cover the anal area and sit in this (SITZ BATH) three to four times daily.
3.
Comfort comes first: A day or more of bed rest to take the pressure off the inflamed and irritated veins will be of good help.
If you are pregnant try to sleep on your sides.
Sleeping on the tummy with a pillow under the hips if you are not pregnant is also a good idea.
Avoid lifting heavy weights.
Do not sit or stand for long periods of time when the hemorrhoids are inflamed.
Wear a cotton underwear to prevent moisture build-up in the anal area and loose clothing will help reduce pressure on the anal area.
And of course always try to maintain a healthy lifestyle with an active exercise regime, avoid straining during bowel movements, incorporate fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet and try to cut down on weight to prevent hemorrhoids from forming in the first place.
