Staying in Ludlow?

105 8
If you are like me you enjoy nothing more than a relaxing break in the English countryside, partaking of beautiful scenery, interesting sights to visit, good food, friendly company, a comfortable bed, and good weather!

Of course, the last of these requirements can never be guaranteed, but certainly if you pay a visit to Ludlow, in South Shropshire, all the other criteria should be met.

Firstly there is the scenery. It would be difficult to find a more attractive vista than that on offer within a short distance from Ludlow at places such as Corvedale, and if you are the active type there is the additional bonus of many options available for walking or cycling, including the spectacular Long Mynd.

For people who like looking at historic buildings you really can't beat Ludlow, which offers a range of architectural gems. Ludlow Castle dates from Norman times, being built originally as part of the campaign to repel potential Welsh invaders, and is still an impressive looking fortress. The Feathers Inn, much photographed and admired since its construction in 1691, is well worth a look, but if Georgian architecture is your thing, there is much to be enjoyed in the streets of this old town.

These are just a few of the attractions for the visitor to the Ludlow area, and hopefully you will have read enough to consider the first two above criteria well and truly met. So how about the accommodation issues?

When I look for holiday accommodation my preference is always for a tranquil place that offers a friendly welcome, a comfortable and cosy environment with good facilities, and a comfortable bed - all at a reasonable price. In short, I like the facility that a good bed and breakfast provides for me to relax and unwind. This is not to say that the service on offer at a hotel is necessarily bad, but it seems fair to say that as a typical B & B has only a few rooms, each lost customer makes a far greater impact on the business than it would in a hotel. Thus there is a greater imperative for your b & b host to ensure that you enjoy your stay.

What should you look for in seeking a bed and breakfast in Ludlow?

Different people will have different priorities, but it seems likely that most of us will agree on some basic requirements:

*A warm, friendly reception from your host, who receives you as a welcome guest and offers personal attention.
*A comfortably furnished room, ideally with en-suite, a comfortable bed, and facilities to make a drink. Additionally, if a few chocolates and biscuits are provided in the room that is certainly all to the good!
*A hearty breakfast to greet you in the morning and set you up for the day, offering a range of options and made from quality local products.

Other desirable facilities include a safe area to park your car and a garden in which to while away some time taking in the view, reading, or just relaxing.

It is a really good experience to engage with your host. Pick their brains about the local attractions; it is very likely that they will be able to point you to visit a place that you had not considered previously.

The fact that you only eat one meal per day in the B & B means that you have lots of time left to enjoy yourself, and to eat lunch and dinner in pubs or restaurants in the area. The whole day is yours, and in the evening you can return to your bed and breakfast in Ludlow , receive another warm welcome, and slump into that comfy bed!
