If you book a holiday break in one of the many fabulous Barcelona luxury hotels in July, you may notice an unusual and very colourful sight as a fleet of hot air balloons sail through the Spanish skies. During July, Barcelona will play proud host to the biggest balloon festival in the country - the European Balloon Festival 2013. A plethora of balloons compete in a four-day competition, some taking off in the early morning and some in the afternoon. Over 250,000 spectators will watch from below, admiring the 50-plus balloons as they cut a swathe through the sky.

Join in the Balloon Festival

As much as this festival provides great entertainment for locals and visitors, it also offers its spectators the opportunity to join in the fun. If you book in advance to guarantee a space, you can head off up into the skies yourself in one of the beautifully designed balloons. As you float up higher and higher, you can see the patchwork of colourful camping spaces below. These are, in fact, recycled balloons, which have been turned into unique living spaces where anyone can stay overnight. While a very different experience to a night spent in one of the Barcelona luxury hotels, it is nonetheless one worth having! Life is more fun when you're living on the edge as you will witness during this festival, so why not try living (if just for a night) in a recycled hot air balloon?

What to Do

If you don't have four whole days spare to spend watching the mammoth balloons take off into the sky during the festival, don't worry; even just a day trip to the festival will allow you to soak in the wonderful sights and atmosphere and visit the interesting stalls at the festival. Why not take the chance to try some delicious Catalonian cuisine as you watch the action overhead.

This is a great festival for couples, friends, lone rangers and, especially, families. Those with children can spend time in the Fun Zone - and it's free for all. There are other activities to take part in as well, such as a photography contest - the spectacular sights over these four action-packed days are well worth capturing. The "glow" balloons and fireworks display in the evenings will contrast the colourful and exciting sights during the day and you may come away with some award-winning images!

The colour and ambience of this unique festival will leave a lasting impression; the dream like landscape filled with beautiful balloons on high creates a memorable atmosphere. If you're planning a trip to the European Balloon Festival 2013, Barcelona luxury hotels will place you right in the centre of the action - and you won't even need to leave your room if you don't want!
