I made sure I breastfed both of my babies.
The first breastfed for 15 months and the other for 10 months.
I am a firm believer in breastfeeding and all it promotes.
While you are pregnant, your body prepares a very special blend of nutrients to meet your baby's needs.
Colostrum also known as fore milk is the perfect starter food for your baby.
This yellowish, creamy substance is found in the breasts during pregnancy and for a few days after delivery.
Colostrum takes care of all your baby's nutritional needs right after birth as well as offers important protection against bacteria and viruses.
Colostrum also stimulates your baby's first bowel movement [Meconium - dark sticky stool made while the baby is still in you).
Over the first few days after your baby is born, the amount of breast milk you make will increase.
Breast milk is made of fats, sugars, proteins, minerals, vitamins, and enzymes and is designed to promote brain and body growth.
Antibodies are also present in Studies show that if you breast feed your baby exclusively for the first 4-6 months your visits to the doctor will be far and in between, because it helps build your baby's immunity against infections.
This I know firsthand as I experienced it with both of my babies.
The medical problems that may be prevented by breast milk include but are not limited to: Ear infections, diabetes, intestinal problems, and several food allergies.
A baby with colic also gets relief from regular breastfeeding Breast-feeding also reduces the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) or "crib death.
" Feeding your baby breast milk exclusively may give his/her brain and visual development an extra boost.
The activity of suckling at the breast aids faster speech development than in babies who are not breastfed.
My son who breast fed till 15 months started talking before his first birthday and he is so intelligent at times I forget he is just 3 years old.
My daughter is also catching up fast despite the fact that I stopped breast feeding her at 10 months.
She is very sharp and energetic at times she tires me out.
They have also been proven studies carried out that show that prolonged breastfeeding reduces the risk of breast cancer, ovarian cancer and diabetics in mothers later in life.
Are you a believer? Try breastfeeding and you too will become a strong advocate.
