Hiking in Hot Weather

    • 1). Decide when to hike. When hiking in hot weather you should try to hike during the mornings or close to evening. The sun will not be at its hottest and will make your hike more comfortable.

    • 2). You should always bring plenty of water with you when you go hiking. When you sweat you lose fluid, and if it is not replaced you become dehydrated. If you know in advance that you are going on a hike, then try to drink a lot the day before to make sure you are good and hydrated.

    • 3). Wear a hat or some kind of covering for your head. It will help keep you cooler if the sun is not beating down directly on your head.

    • 4). It is important to wear the right kind of clothing when hiking in hot weather. You need something that is light, breathable and loose-fitting. Your clothing should also be light-colored or white. Dark colors absorb heat while light colors reflect heat. Synthetic T-shirts and shorts that lay against your skin but don't restrict is the best at a cheaper price.

    • 5). Do not over-exert yourself in the heat, at least not for long periods of time. You do not want to have a heat stroke. Rest for a few minutes when you feel tired and look for shade if at all possible. Also wear sunblock. The last thing you want is to get a massive sunburn while hiking.
