Breeding goldfish can be a complicated work if you are not well aware of a few important tips.
It is seen that breeding the common types is quite difficult, let alone the exotic ones.
First important aspect of successful goldfish breeding is adequate space.
A 20-gallon tank is required for the parent goldfish.
Again, a female goldfish can lay as much as 10,000 eggs at a time.
So it is always good to choose a bigger tank with enough space for successful breeding.
The second thing is that you need to adjust the water temperatures continuously in order to stimulate altering seasons while breeding as well as in pre-spawning and spawning periods.
You may know about the right temperatures in the fish breeding guides available.
Quality of Breeds You will obviously want good quality of breeding.
However, the quality of the babies will depend on the parent goldfish.
So it is important for you to select fish which have good fins, good body size, good color and shape.
While selecting your parent goldfish go for young fish aged two to four years of age.
Mating Parents It is easy to know when your goldfish are ready for spawning because their colors will intensify at the time.
The\y will start to formulate groups and you will see that some male fish may single out a female one and chase her energetically through the fish tank water.
During mating the male one will push the female one and they both rotate from one side to another.
Accordingly the female releases her eggs for fertilization, the eggs glue to fish tank plants or to the sponge filters until they hatch.
It should be remembered that the spawning period can last as long as a few days.
Again the goldfish lack parenting instincts so you must be careful enough to take out the adults from your fish tank.
If you do not do this the eggs may get devoured.
Egg Growth Goldfish eggs look like small transparent bubbles.
The color of the fertile eggs is like pale yellow, whereas the color of infertile eggs is of opaque white.
You must remove the infertile eggs as soon as possible because they can be covered by fungus in a single day.
In fertilized eggs you can notice pigmented eyes as well as tiny spots and a beating heart which forms in two to three days after fertilization.
In around ten days the little ones will be free to have food.
Their skin coloring starts to appear after one month's time.
How to care for the fry You must feed your fry with health diet at least four to six times in a day.
This should go on for a few weeks.
Apart from that you can offer an alternative food containing hard-boiled egg yolk mixed with water.
This is a great first food for the fry.
You must remember that the fry are very delicate and therefore you should not initiate any sudden change in their water conditions.
