There are basically three things you are going to need to do to keep your feline and your home flea-free during those hot summer months when flea infestation is most likely to occur.
First you have to be sure there are absolutely no fleas on your cat.
If you search the internet you will find there are quiet a number of great natural shampoo formulas for killing any and all of those pesky critters lurking in those hard to see spots beneath your cats fur.
I am not going to give formulas for natural shampoos in this article, put they are numerous and easy to find.
After you have applied the shampoo you felt was the best for your particular pet, then you need to comb your cats fur with a fine toothed comb that you can purchase at any pet store for exactly this purpose.
This needs to be a regular routine and not something you only do occasionally.
Even thought a good shampooing with natural ingredients will probably do the job, be sure and do a thorough job of combing just in case one or two survived.
If you happen to trap any, immediately put them in some hot soapy water.
When you are finished, flush them down the toilet.
It wouldn't be a bad idea to put on a good quality natural flea collar when you are finished.
Also, be sure and wash your cat's blanket or bedding if he/she sleeps on one, at least once a week with hot soapy water, followed by high heat drying.
The second thing you need to do is make sure your house isn't infested.
If you can afford it, have your carpet steam cleaned.
This will kill pretty much any and all fleas, larvae and eggs hidden somewhere in you carpet.
Be sure to thoroughly vacuum your floors and furniture often.
The places your cat sleeps should get a little extra cleaning.
A good trick is to put a natural flea killer, or maybe and old but still usable flea collar in your vacuum bag to exterminate any fleas that the vacuum cleaner has sucked up.
You can also spray some natural flea control formulas in your carpet for added protection.
Last but not least, try to keep fleas out of your yard.
If they aren't in the yard they can't enter the house.
A couple of good things to do is spray with some natural flea control spray.
You can easily find the ingredients to use on the internet or some of the books sold for cat care.
Applying nematodes to your yard will also help tremendously.
Nematodes are small worms that eat flea eggs and larvae.
There are many companies that sell nematode cultures that you can use to seed your yard.
By following these three steps for natural flea control, your cat, your yard, and your home should remain virtually flea free through the whole season.
It takes a little work, but if you have ever had a flea infestation, you know it is worth the trouble.
