How to Get Information on Hotels

    • 1). Contact the tourist bureau or visitor's information center in your destination city and request information about local hotel certifications or accrediting organizations, which often publish online or print travel guides with local hotel information. Most visitor's information centers can also either recommend hotels directly or point you toward the best published guides for finding local hotels.

    • 2). Visit the hotel's website directly. This is the best way to get correct, up-to-date information about hotel amenities; aggregate hotel search websites sometimes get important details--like shuttle bus availability, parking availability and cost or restaurant hours--wrong.

    • 3). Call the hotel anyway to verify any critically important information; for instance, if you're bringing a pet, call ahead when you make your reservations to confirm that they do in fact allow pets and whether there are special room rates or deposits required.

    • 4). Check local guidebooks. The guidebook authors may include candid opinions and information that the hotel proprietors haven't thought to include (or disclose) in their marketing materials.

    • 5). Consult a travel review website like Tripadvisor, where you can read detailed reviews from other hotel guests and, sometimes, responses from the hotel administration. Sites like Fodor's offer a mix of user reviews and editorial reviews, and travel booking sites like Travelocity often offers user reviews in conjunction with their search and booking results.

    • 6). Contact any travel or user groups you may be a member of, including AAA and AARP, and inquire about any member guides, booking services or ratings for hotels; these are all valuable resources for accumulating more information on hotels at your destination of choice.
