Scholarships for African American MBA Students
- Established in 1966, the Consortium for Graduate Study in Management began with a mission to fund the education of black male MBA candidates. Currently the organization disseminates awards covering the full tuition and mandatory fees of students of color and women. Members of the Consortium include corporations and leading business schools. Nearly 20 schools participate in the program. Students apply online and can choose up to six schools in a common application that also serves as their admission application. Students must also schedule an interview with a Consortium member. Eligibility is limited to U.S. citizens and permanent residents. The application for the award is available online.
- Some non-profit associations and foundations provide scholarships to African American MBA students. The National Black MBA Association (NBMBAA) awards 25 scholarships of up to $15,000, as of 2011, to student members enrolled in MBA programs in the U.S. Student winners must agree to participate in NBMBAA activities. Some NBMBAA chapters also offer their own scholarships to black MBA students. The Washington, D.C. chapter of NBMBAA also partners with the George Washington Business School in a scholarship program. Students can apply for NBMBAA scholarships online.
- The global investment banking firm Goldman Sachs offers scholarships to students of color including African Americans. The aim of the program is to increase the diversity of management in the company and awareness of finance careers among students of color. In 2011, the MBA Fellowship includes a $15,000 award for tuition, fee and living expenses during the student's first year. A summer internship is also a part of the program. If a student successfully completes the internship and receives an employment offer for after graduation, the company will also grant another $15,000 for the second year of studies.
- The goal of the Robert Toigo Foundation is to increase the number of minorities in finance careers. The organization supports this mission with a program that awards $5,000, as of 2011, each spring to MBA students based on merit. Winners also received mentoring, personal coaching, leadership development and networking opportunities among the foundation's 800 alumni. Students can apply for the fellowship online.
- Many MBA programs offer their own in-house scholarships for African American students. Yale offers the Frederick T. Holliday and Frederick T. Holliday, Jr. Memorial Scholarship for African American students. The University of Chicago's Booth School of Business has two scholarships targeting underrepresented minorities including black students. Public universities like the University of Virginia's Darden School also have endowed scholarships for black students. Students apply directly to the financial aid office of their institution for these scholarships.
