Former college basketballer enters prison for 2-year assault sentence
(CNN) -- A former U.S. college basketball player entered a prison in his native Serbia Friday to begin his two-year sentence for the near fatal beating of a fellow student at a New York university, his attorney said.
Miladin Kovacevic was sentenced in November for brutally beating fellow student Bryan Steinhauer, 24, outside a bar near Binghamton University in May 2008.
Shortly after the incident, Kovacevic jumped bail and fled to his native Serbia with the assistance of Serbian diplomats, who helped him get a new passport to replace the one he surrendered when he was released on bail. The Serbian government eventually paid $900,000 to the Steinhauer family for the misconduct of Serbian officials in the case.
Hillary Clinton, first as a senator from New York and later as secretary of state, and Sen. Charles Schumer, also of New York, fought to have Kovacevic prosecuted, eventually leading Serbian prosecutors to file charges early last year. Broome County, New York, prosecutors assisted them with their prosecution of Kovacevic. Serbia has no extradition treaty with the United States.
Kovacevic was charged with inflicting severe bodily harm with possible deadly consequences and obtaining and using a false passport. He faced eight years in jail, but reached an agreement with prosecutors to plead guilty and serve two years and three months for assault. The passport charges were dismissed for his cooperation in the prosecution of the Serbian officials who helped him flee the United States.
