Sexual Pleasure

Definition:

Sexual pleasure refers to pleasurable feelings that accompany sexual experiences. We may feel sexual pleasure in response to a sexual activity, sexual thoughts, or feelings, alone or with one or more partners. If an interaction feels sexual to us, and we feel pleasure from it, then we're experiencing sexual pleasure. Sexual pleasure may be mild or intense, it may last for seconds or hours.

Orgasm is only one experience of sexual pleasure (albeit the most talked about experience).

Sexual pleasure may seem obvious, but it's important to talk about it because may people engage in sexual behaviors and don't experience pleasure during it. Sexual pleasure is not a given, even if people are engaging in multiple kinds of sexual activities. So in addition to talking about sexual desire, arousal, activities, and orgasm, it's important to ask about how much sexual pleasure someone is experiencing, when they are experiencing it, and why they think certain things result in sexual pleasure.

Sexual pleasure is completely subjective. Researchers may try to generalize, but even a cursory consideration of the body of human knowledge about sexuality demonstrates that there are no absolutes when it comes to sexual pleasure. People may feel pleasure in response to things that others would never even think of as sexual, let along pleasurable.

In this way, dictating what will-or-won't be, should-or-shouldn't be pleasurable for others is a waste of time.

Discovering what those things are that result in you feeling sexual pleasure, and finding things that give you pleasure that also give others pleasure, is perhaps a more fruitful exercise.
