Is your kid really obese or just overweight? What's the difference? What are some consequences of overweight? How can you help him or her to lose weight? Overweight and BMI Formula In order to know if your kid is overweight you need a specific tool, a BMI formula.
BMI means Body Mass Index.
1) Calculate his or her BMI The standard formula (weight in pounds and height in inches) is: BMI = [weight / (height x height)] x 703.
Suppose, for example, your 13 year-old-girl's weight is 150 pounds and her height is 5'3 feet or 63 inches.
Then, apply the BMI formula using a calculator: [150 / (63 x 63)] x 703 = 26.

A BMI included between 5th and 85th percentile means that your child has a healthy weight.
