How to Teach a Dog to Stop Licking

    • 1). Determine why your dog is licking. Dogs lick to express their affection for you, to get attention or when it just becomes a habit. Some dogs may just like the taste of your body lotion.

    • 2). Start with a strong verbal command. Familiarize your dog with the word "no" or another sound that he associates with negative reinforcement. As soon as the dog starts licking you, reprimand him with your voice. Be consistent. Try giving the dog another command (such as "sit") to distract him from licking and engage his brain.

    • 3). Turn away from the dog when he licks you. Don't make eye contact with him, and pull your hand away if he licks your hand. As soon as he stops licking, praise the dog.

    • 4). Squeal or yelp in pain. This sends a message to the dog that he has hurt you and many dogs will be startled and stop licking.

    • 5). Apply lemon or hot sauce to your skin. The taste will help discourage your dog from licking. However, make sure you wash it off as soon as possible as it is not great for your skin.
