Homemade Wild Bird Seed
- 1). Place 1 1/4 lbs. of suet into a medium saucepan. Suet is raw fat that is found in the loins and kidneys of cows. Heat the suet over medium heat until it melts. You will have about 2 cups of liquid suet at this point.
- 2). Remove the pan from the heat and add 1/2 cup each crushed peanuts, cracked corn and sunflower seeds.
- 3). Use a wooden spoon to stir the mixture until well combined.
- 4). Place the mixture into a 4-cup container.
- 5). Press a plastic drinking straw all the way through the mixture near one of the edges. Leave the straw in place as the mixture cools.
- 6). Place the container in the refrigerator until it is completely cool and solidified.
- 7). Remove your cooled seed mixture from the mold and discard the plastic drinking straw.
- 8). Feed a piece of twine through the hole the straw left. Use the twine to hang your bird treat from a tree.
- 1). Mix together 2 cups each chopped apples and raisins. Use dried apples, since fresh apples will mold.
- 2). Add 2 cups of chopped nuts. Any type of nut will work, including almonds, walnuts or pecans.
- 3). Add 1 cup each chopped prunes and dried squash seeds.
- 4). Place your mixture in a platform bird feeder. Store leftovers in a paper bag. Keep the bag in a dry location, away from heat.
