Menorca - A Little Island That Has It All
If the idea of heading to one of the Spanish party islands doesn't really appeal to you, but you have your heart set on the Balearic Islands to catch some summer sunshine, why not head to Menorca? Villas around the island make the perfect base from which to explore. No matter whether you are into history, culture, or simply lazing about by the water, you will always be within arms' reach of anything you want on Menorca. Villas near the ocean provide easy access to the many stunning beaches, while those located inland make it simple to explore the rural aspects on foot, bike or even on horseback.
History
If you are a history aficionado paying a visit to Menorca, villas within access of Ciutadella, the second largest city on the island, are ideal. Founded by the Carthaginians, Ciutadella switched hands several times over the centuries, and became established as an important trading post. When you explore the city, head straight for the Old Town and the beautiful cathedral; it still acts as seat of the island's bishop, even though the governmental powers long ago moved to Mahon. The cathedral was built in the 14th century in Catalan Gothic style and is well worth having a leisurely wander through. Afterwards, take a stroll to the old port and pop into one of the many restaurants along the waterline.
Living culture
As with most places, when visitors come to Menorca, villas are chosen for their location and amenities often in precedence to the culture they provide access to. However, it is worth bearing in mind there are quite a few interesting festivals that happen at various times of the year around the island. In June, you can hit the Sant Antoni de Juny festival in Arta, to see the locals dressed up as horses; you can join in the blessing of fishing boats all over the island in July at the Dia de Virgen de Carmen; and in September there is the traditional festival of Processio de la Beata in Santa Margalida. There are plenty more festivals held throughout the year, just do a little research to see if your dates coincide with any - you won't be disappointed if you get the opportunity to join in.
Lazing about
This lovely island has far more accessible beaches than its larger sister, Majorca. When staying on Menorca, villas near the coast make it simple to get to a variety of secluded beaches. You can also easily reach some of the larger and more active beaches such as Punto Prima without much trouble if you have access to a car or don't mind public transport. If you are seeking tranquillity and relaxation, you really cannot beat this place, though: with so many hidden coves and shallow, warm, turquoise waters, it is the best place to truly relax away from the hustle and bustle of your normal life.
