Texas is not usually thought of for its lakes, but lakes are present throughout the state. Texas has over 550 lakes due, in part, to the numerous reservoirs found throughout the state. The state has, in fact, just one natural lake. - Caddo Lake is the only natural lake in Texas, according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The lake, which is located in northeastern Texas near the city of Karnack, is a subtropical lake surrounded by natural wetlands and filled with aquatic plants. Caddo Lake is surrounded by Caddo Lake State Park, which offers numerous opportunities for fishing, hiking, camping and canoeing.

tpwd.state.tx.us - Although not a natural lake, Lake Whitney is nonetheless a beautiful lake. The lake, which was made by damming the Brazos River, is located in north-central Texas southwest of Fort Worth. The lake is surrounded by the Lake Whitney State Park, which features a tallgrass prairie landscape. The park offers biking, hiking, canoeing and swimming.

tpwd.state.tx.us/ - Lake Amistad, also known as Amistad Reservoir, is a large reservoir located on the United States-Mexico border near Del Rio, Tex. The lake, which has a surface area of 64,900, is located in the desert region of Texas's Big Bend. The lake is surrounded by Amistad National Recreation Area, which is operated by the National Park Service. The lake offers boating, fishing, canoeing and hiking.
