Five Natural Ways to Combat Tinnitus

Here are five natural ways of combating the effects of tinnitus using simple lifestyle changes; Diet; eating a healthy diet rich in nutrients will help the body combat illness and promote a feeling of well being.
Certain foods which have been shown to aggravate the symptoms of tinnitus include foods containing caffeine (such as coffee, tea, coca cola and chocolate), alcohol, dairy products, wheat products, some citrus fruits and, surprisingly, strawberries.
You should notice some benefits from limiting these foods in your diet.
Avoid excessive salt consumption, as this can impair blood circulation and make tinnitus symptoms worse.
Dehydration can increase symptoms, so make sure you drink plenty of water during the day and limit tea and coffee, which are diuretics.
Stop smoking; smoking can also impact on circulation and destroys vital nutrients within the body.
Processing the toxins and chemicals in each cigarette puts an enormous amount of strain on the body and you may notice an increase in tinnitus symptoms after smoking.
Smoking also suppresses the immune system, so stopping smoking will increase your body's ability to fight health conditions which may cause tinnitus, as well as greatly improving your overall health and well being.
Supplements; some nutritional and herbal supplements can greatly reduce symptoms of tinnitus.
Weekly or twice weekly B12 injections have been shown to be beneficial for some sufferers.
Magnesium supplements have also been shown to reverse tinnitus induced hearing loss.
Niacin, which is a form of Vitamin B3, can allow more oxygen into the inner ear, which can help the blood vessels to expand.
This can reduce the sounds associated with tinnitus.
Vitamin B can also help to reduce the pressure in your ears.
Sometimes a zinc deficiency can be responsible for some tinnitus symptoms; if you suspect this to be the case then zinc supplements may help, or try to eat foods rich in zinc such as shellfish, nuts, cheese and whole grains.
Ginkgo Bilboa or black cohosh are other supplements which have been shown to reduce tinnitus symptoms.
These work by expanding the blood vessels and thus increasing blood flow in the head and neck.
You will need to try these for a minimum of two months before any benefits are noticed.
Exercise; exercise can play a huge part in increasing overall health and well being.
Regular exercise can boost the immune system and help maintain a healthy circulation.
The key is finding an exercise plan you enjoy and will stick to- there is little point joining a gym if you dislike exercising in a gym, as you will not go after the first week.
Walking your dog, going cycling or playing tennis with a friend are all exercises you can do.
Remember to start exercising gently and gradually build up, particularly if you have not exercised for some time.
Exercise can also promote restful sleep, which can in turn alleviate tinnitus symptoms.
Reduce Stress; if we are feeling stressed, this can aggravate the symptoms of tinnitus and make the tinnitus noises much more apparent to us.
Stress can even cause tinnitus, as it affects the blood vessels and slows blood circulation, as well as increasing blood pressure.
You may be caught in a cycle of feeling stressed and anxious due to the tinnitus, which in turn aggravates the symptoms.
If you reduce the amount of stress you are under, you should see a reduction in symptoms, or even find that your tinnitus disappears completely.
Ways of reducing stress include; •Looking at areas in your life currently causing you the most stress and try to find ways of resolving these.
Talking to your work supervisor or family members may help you to resolve issues or find avenues of support.
•Make sure you get enough restful sleep.
Lack of sleep can both increase stress and aggravate the symptoms of tinnitus.
•Regular exercise can help promote restful sleep.
It can also reduce stress, as the body releases endorphins during exercise which make us feel good.
•Relaxation techniques such as yoga or meditation can help a great deal.
Practising breathing techniques can also be beneficial, especially if you are feeling anxious.
•Some people find massage relaxes them and helps them feel less stressed.
Massage can also reduce muscle tension, which can cause tinnitus, and improve circulation.
If you follow this advice, you should not only notice a reduction of the symptoms of tinnitus, but will also feel much fitter and healthier.
Remember to consult your doctor in the first instance if you are considering trying alternative methods of treatment or if you require dietary advice.
