How to Make a Craft Smock Out of Dad's Shirt

    • 1). Wash Dad's old shirt using a gentle detergent. Place it in the hot dryer to encourage any additional shrinkage so that the shirt will be the best fit for your child.

    • 2). Cut the sleeves off the shirt so that the child will not drag them through the arts and craft project.

    • 3). Provide your child with scraps of material to glue on the shirt. Use a glue that is safe and washable for fabrics because the smock will likely need many washings. Adhere the patches in any way your child wishes or cut out fabric pieces in the shape of favorite things such as space objects, flowers or hearts.

    • 4). Ask the child to paint his or her name on the front or back of the shirt with fabric paint to further personalize the smock.

    • 5). Measure your child's waist and cut a thick piece of soft ribbon long enough to go around it. Have the child put the smock on, and tie the ribbon it to secure the smock during craft projects.
