My recent visit to Wine Country really did feel like coming home. Years ago, when I lived in San Francisco, I regularly spent the weekends enjoying Napa Valley’s beautiful scenery and fantastic restaurants. Just an hour and a half drive from the Bay Area, North Block Hotel claims a prime spot on the north end of Yountville, the quintessential Wine Country town. This modern boutique-style hotel is within walking distance of Yountville's Michelin-starred restaurants and quaint wine tasting rooms.

North Block Hotel is casual and unpretentious and its location in the heart of Napa Valley makes it a great base for exploring the surrounding area.

Guest Rooms

The hotel's twenty guest rooms face the communal courtyard of the hotel, which is an ideal place to gather after a day of wine country fun. The rooms are simple and sophisticated with goose down duvets, crisp white linens and thick, comfy mattresses. Guest rooms on the bottom floor have furnished patios while the upstairs rooms have small balconies, both of which are great spots for taking in the view of Napa Valley’s rolling hills.

The bathrooms are large and feature double sinks, rain showerheads, large soaking tubs, and glass showers. The bath products were designed exclusively for the hotel and the heated floors are a nice touch, too. All of the guestrooms have flat screen televisions, iPod docking stations, small refrigerators, and espresso machines. Complementary onsite parking and free wireless Internet are a bonus.

Dining

Yountville is a culinary mecca and North Block Hotel's restaurant, Redd Wood, sticks with the theme.

After huge success with his first venture, Redd, acclaimed Northern California chef Richard Reddington opened Redd Wood in January 2012 at North Block Hotel. Redd Wood is much more casual and laid back than its older sister, offering Italian inspired dishes that range from wood-fired pizzas, salads, and house made pastas to cured meats and pates.

I sat on the patio facing Washington Street and although it was a chilly night, the heat lamps were cranking. A glass of local Cabernet, a grilled cheese sandwich, and a bowl of tomato bisque were the prefect ending to my Napa Valley day. Redd Wood is open for lunch and dinner year round and adds breakfast service during the summer.

Activities

The North Block Spa is modest and has three intimate treatment rooms. The spa specializes in massage and facials and offers unique treatments with locally made products. One such treatment is called Un-Corked and is a foot and back exfoliation combined with a traditional massage. In this treatment, freshly ground grape seeds are used to renew skin on the feet and back while wine corks and fingertips stimulate reflex points on the bottom of the feet.

The hotel has a heated outdoor pool with a limited number of lounge chairs and umbrellas. There is a small gym that is open to guests 24/7.

One of the best things to do on the property is to relax by the outdoor fireplace after a day exploring Wine Country. In this communal area, guests gather for a glass of wine, take in the stars, and reflect on the adventures of the day.
