Understanding Your Troubled Relationship - Can You Save It
You don't know what to do. Your relationship is perhaps coming to a natural death and you are loathe to admit it to yourself. You find yourself in a rut. You try to kid yourself you are happy yet you know you are not. You are afraid of making an abrupt change in your life that may leave you in a situation you cannot clearly predict beforehand. You pretend to yourself you are happy and you are finding the game you are playing very stressful. You still feel you love your partner but other factors give you mixed feelings about the viability of your relationship.
You must begin by thinking seriously about your relationship. Make a list of what you want and don't you want from it. You will want things that will bring life to your jaded relationship; either romantic or intellectual stimulation or both. You will not want infidelity, abuse from your partner nor that they ignore you and live their lives, for example. .
From your list you then have to select the elements that you consider are essential for you in the relationship. You then have to decide if your partner is capable of taking their part in resuscitating the relationship and moving it forward along the lines that you have decided are necessary for you.
Now you have evaluated the situation you have to decide what to do. If the situation is desperate it may be better to decide a separation while you each decide what you want to do. It may be easier to achieve this when the stress of living together is no longer present
It could be that after this you both conclude that the relationship no longer has any real sense. There are some relationships that can ever succeed and after all you can still move on and find a more suitable partner. Never forget that there are plenty of others out there and so don't think it is impossible for you to find who you are looking for. If, however, you both feel that you can bring the old relationship back to life and make it work, you must be sure to be able to communicate with each other in an open way; without this things will be very difficult.
This may bring you to the conclusion that the relationship is no longer viable and it is best to separate on a permanent basis. Some relationships are doomed to failure, and when all is over you will always find someone else hopefully more suited to you. However, if you are both able to make things work in your relationship be sure that you both talk to each other in an open manner. If you do not, you will likely have further problems.
Don't think that, just because your relationship is troubled, that all is going to end. It is for you both to do the hard work that will move it forward whether this is towards its finish or its continuation.
