Myths About Rhinoplasty

There are a multitude of myths surrounding rhinoplasty. We hear them every day from patients. While these are common beliefs, many resources do not provide the right information to dispel concerns and enlighten people wanting the cosmetic or corrective procedure.

Below, we delve into some of those big rhinoplasty myths and set the record straight:

•    Rhinoplasty is quick and easy. Rhinoplasty can be meticulous and requires the surgeon to be very analytical in his or her approach to reshaping or correction of the nose. A slight change in one area to improve a profile view of the face can create problems for the front view. Similarly, changing a part of the nose to produce better results for a frontal view can equally damage the profile. Some cases are simple and do not demand much surgical time. Others can be quite involved and require skill and patience for the surgeon and a bit more time in the operating room. The best approach is to talk with your physician at Mosharrafa Plastic Surgery to gain insight into your individual needs and surgical requirements.

•    People who have corrective or cosmetic nose surgery look like they have a fake nose. In the early days of plastic surgery, surgeons often learned only a few approaches to common structural or cosmetic problems with the nose. When performing rhinoplasty surgery, they would default to those options, regardless of the patient's specific needs and other considerations such as ethnic differences in facial structure. In more modern years, the field of facial plastic surgery has expanded with increased knowledge and awareness of the intricacies of varied problems and ways to achieve looks more consistent with an endless variety of facial types. Today's surgeon is better prepared and educated to perform more realistic and individualized results in rhinoplasty. The overriding goal for rhinoplasty is to ensure the results appear as natural for that individual as possible.

•    Through surgery, I can have any nose I want. This is a common misconception. It simply is not true, as your individual face and nasal structure provide the basis for what a surgeon can do for your specific nose. While a surgeon can relate to your presentation of a famous person's photo as your ideal nose, doing so only provides an aesthetic idea of what you like. Your nose's own bones, cartilage and skin will provide greater influence over attainable results. By asking your physician what he or she can do with your nose, you will have a better perspective of potential outcome, than a photograph of another person will provide.

•    Only women undergo rhinoplasty. This is not true. At least one quarter of all rhinoplasty patients are male. Men are often just as concerned about their appearance as women. The surgeons of Mosharrafa Plastic Surgery are available to perform surgical procedures on both males and females.
