How to Cancel Credit Card Accounts
- 1). Gather all credit cards information. This includes: name of cardholder, most recent balance, phone number for credit card company, and address.
- 2). Review all credit card balances. The credit card being canceled must have a zero balance. If it does not have a zero balance you can pay it off in full or transfer balance to another card.
- 3). Determine which cards have a zero balance. Once the account has a zero balance call the credit card company to cancel the card.
- 4). Close your account. Some credit card companies will request a signature to close the account. If the company will not close this account over the phone, write a brief letter. The letter should contain: 1) your name; 2) that you wish to close your account; 3) the account has a zero balance; 4) your account number; 5) your phone number in case they have any questions.
- 5). Sign the letter them keep a copies for your records. Address the letter to your payment center where the bills are paid with "attn: Card Cancellation Center" in the lower right corner of the envelope.
