How to Choose a Trade Name

    • 1). Create a list of adjectives that accurately describe your business. The first step in choosing the perfect trade name is to brainstorm for words, adjectives and phrases that can be used to create the name. Write down any and all ideas that you think of from descriptive words to the name of the business owner(s).

    • 2). Consider what type of business you will be running and how you will be using the name. A trade name that is perfect for a bakery or a landscaping business might not work for an accounting firm. Professional businesses usually include the name of the business partners or professional terms of art that describe the services that the business provides such as "Smith and White Accounting Associates". Other businesses might merit a more creative title, such as "Goldie Locks" for a hair salon. Consider the type of services that you provide and use your business function as a guide.

    • 3). Consider what type of image you want to portray and ask yourself if your chosen name reflects that image. If you offer professional services, you should focus on traditional names that reflect established professionalism. If you are starting an eco-conscious clothing company, include descriptive words that tell your potential customers that you not only provide fashionable pieces, but that they will also be helping the environment by buying your product. A name that is catchy, easy to remember and creates an emotional connection will help you create an appropriate, marketable business identity.

    • 4). Check to see if anyone else is using the name that you choose. You can perform a search by checking the U.S. trademark database. You should also check with the Department of State in your specific state to find out if anyone has previously registered your trade name in the state. If these formal sources check out, you should still do a basic Internet search to see if anyone who has not registered the name is using it as a website address or to identify their business. If all your checks came back clear, you have a green light to use your chosen trade name.
