Homemade Wood Putty
- There aren't very many ingredients in woody putty and it is a very basic product to make. You will either use sawdust of wood that you have left over from working on the project, or you can take a table saw and create some. You will need the finest wood dust that you have.
There are a couple of different kinds of glue that you can use, but it depends on what you are doing. PVA Yellow glue should only be used for when you do not need to stain it because if you try, you will only have blotches over your work. For staining, a hide glue works better. You will also need a piece of board on which to mix the putty, a dowel and your stain. - Put the fine saw dust on your board and slowly pour the glue into the sawdust, mixing it with your small dowel. You can also use your fingers, but it is quite messy.
Now that you have a mixture you will have to knead it into the texture essential to fill the holes and dents. To do this, you can work it with your hands, rolling it around your fingers, squeezing and squishing to give it the recognizable tacky feel. - If you are staining your wood, you will need to match the wood putty to that particular color which may be one of the reasons that you decided to make your own. This is not a difficult task either.
When you have made your woody putty, take a part of it and add some drops of stain, very little at a time, and mix it thoroughly. If it is too dark, then you can add more putty, thus the reason for only mixing a part of it. If the putty is too light, then add a slight bit more of the stain. Adding the stain in small increments will ensure that you get the right color without too much hassle.
