Sydney vs Essendon
Round 19
Start Time: Friday, 01 August, 19:50
Stadium: SCG, Sydney

After their first loss in three months, John Longmire could welcome back defender Rhyce Shaw from injury. However Dan Hannebery is still at least a week away. Don't expect too many changes for Essendon after the bye with key players Joe Daniher (shoulder), Michael Hibberd (hamstring), Tom Bellchambers (ankle) and Jobe Watson (hip) still a few weeks away. Jake Melksham, Elliot Kavanagh and Orazio Fantasia have pushed their case for selection in the VFL in recent weeks.

The Bombers have the third best defence averaging just 75 points against per game this year - they rank first in kicks and marks per game. They sit seventh on the ladder with a 10-7 record. Essendon has a 2-5 (but 5-2 against the line) record against top-eight teams this season. They have won their last three in a row including wins over finals fancies Port Adelaide, Adelaide and Collingwood. The Swans lost their first game since early April last weekend breaking a streak of 12-straight. They were 9-4 against the line during this 13-game period. Sydney is 5-3 (4-4 against the line) vs top-8 teams. The Swans rank third in points for and second in least points conceded this year.

These two sides met only 11 weeks ago in round 9 on a Friday night at Etihad Stadium. The Swans got the jump on the Bombers that night leading by six goals at quarter time before cruising to a 50-point victory. Josh Kennedy dominated that night with 39 touches, five tackles and a goal whilst Buddy kicked five from 18 touches and Kurt Tippett and Jarrad McVeigh chipped in with three goals each. For the Bombers, Brendon Goddard had 34 touches whilst boom forward Jake Carlisle was restricted to just six touches and two goals.

Essendon and Sydney have met 214 times with the Bombers leading 130-83 with one draw. The Swans have won five of the last six games against Essendon. Since 2010, the Swans are 5-1 (6-0 against the line) vs Essendon. Buddy has slaughtered the Dons in recent times, kicking a phenomenal 50 goals in his past eight games against them including 13 in his last two games. Since the start of 2012, Sydney is 19-4-1 (16-8) against the line at the SCG, including 5-1 (4-2 against the line) this year. The Bombers are 11-3 (7-7 against the line) when playing outside of Melbourne in the past two and a half years. Essendon is 3-1 both head-to-head and against the line following a bye since the start of 2011. The Swans are 7-3 (6-4 against the line) on Thursday/Friday nights in the last two seasons. The Bombers are 6-6 (8-4 ATL) under the same conditions.
