Project Managing A Bathroom Installation
Is your bathroom looking like it has seen better days? But maybe you do not have the money for an entire new bathroom suite, or maybe you have enough money to buy one but not pay for a full installation service, which can often cost more than the goods itself.
Yet if you can afford a new suite but not the installation then it is actually a fairly simple job to project manage yourself, as typically all you will need is a plumber an electrician, a tiler and a decorator (Although you may wish to carry out the tiling and any painting and decorating yourself depending on how confident or experienced you are at Do It Yourself (DIY) tasks).
The first thing to do is arrange the delivery of the new suite and ensure that you have absolutely everything you need before you remove the old one.
If not and you remove the old one the day before the new one is delivered and it turns up with missing taps or worst still no toilet, then you can have a real problem.
You will then need to arrange for the old one to be disposed of, typically this is best done by finding a "Man and a van" in your local Yellow pages.
You will need to co-ordinate the plumber who will carry out the majority of the work, and get him to liaise with your electrician who will be needed to connect an electric power shower if you are having one installed, and deal with any new lighting installations.
This is not a task you can legally carry out by yourself in the United Kingdom any more.
Whereas once you could do this type of work yourself, you cannot any more and all such electrical work needs carrying out by a 'Part P' qualified electrician who will issue you with a certificate for the work, which you should keep as you will need this to prove the work has been done correctly should you ever sell the house.
Even if you are a competent tiler I would recommend getting a professional to do the work if you have spent a lot of money on your new bathroom suite, as not only will they do a better job but they will also be fully insured, whereas if you drop a tile through your new bath you may not be! Project managing your own bathroom suite installation can save you hundreds of pounds and is easy and just requires you to co-ordinate people well.
