You may be aware that eating too much of the wrong type of foods can cause you health problems that can lead to diabetes.
Insulin resistance is a pattern of elevated blood glucose levels that can cause damage to the human body over long periods of time.
It is a silent enemy that you cannot feel and one that causes progressive damage to blood vessels and nerves throughout the body.
Your cells can become less efficient at processing glucose (sugar) from the bloodstream after continually eating too many high sugar, high carbohydrate foods and drinks.
The body pumps in more and more insulin to try and remove this excess sugar from the blood.
The high levels of insulin which is a fat storing hormone lead to fat being deposited and stored in the abdominal area which is a danger in itself.
This stubborn and hard to shift fat is an indication of metabolic disturbances within your body.
You are in the danger zone if your waistline measures over 35 inches for women and over 40 inches for men as this fat can end up wrapped around major organs in the abdomen which hinder their functioning.
Becoming resistant to insulin hastens the aging process as degeneration of major organs like the heart and its pipes happens are a much faster rate with this villain on board.
Damaged arteries cannot do their job properly and supply the body's cells, organs and tissues with life enhancing nutrients and oxygen.
Yet is does not have to be this way.
One of the most important things you can do to help yourself avoid full blown diabetes is keep blood sugar levels under control and improve your cells sensitivity to insulin so less is needed to do its job.
The very best way to do both of these things at once is with a proper program of strength training exercise.
Your strength training program can increase the way your body utilizes glucose.
Sugar is burnt within the muscle cells for energy when they are being worked and contracting and relaxing.
Your body will process the sugar supplies present in your blood to be able to meet this demand and can clear away up excess from the blood.
Increased blood flow to the muscles when exercising means more sugar is delivered to the cells that can take it up and they become more responsive to insulin which allows more sugar to be cleared away with lower levels of insulin.
Just 2-3 sessions of proper strength training exercise will give you greater protection from the development of insulin resistance and is the key to improving glucose metabolism.
Do not wait for this awful condition to stalk you and hunt you down.
Be proactive and take steps to get started on your exercise program so it never gets its foot in the door of your good health.
