How to Refinish Victoria Cabinet Doors
- 1). Remove the doors from their hinges with a screwdriver. Take off the knobs and other hardware. Lay out the doors on a work space.
- 2). Brush paint stripper over one of the doors, using a paintbrush. Brush it on thickly. Let it sit for about five minutes, until it starts bubbling up.
- 3). Scrape up the softened finish with a plastic putty knife, in the direction of the wood grain. Repeat for each door. Getting off all the finish. Follow up with a nylon scrubbing pad soaked in paint thinner, to take off any remaining material.
- 4). Let the surface dry for eight hours. Sand it down with a vibrating detail sander and fine sandpaper, getting the wood smooth and clean. Wipe off the dust.
- 5). Brush wood stain over the surface of one door, laying it on thickly. Let it sit for one minute. Wipe up the excess stain with a rag. Repeat for each door. Let them dry for eight hours.
- 6). Brush on the varnish with a paintbrush, in a thin, flat coat. Let it dry for eight hours.
- 7). Lightly sand the varnish with fine sandpaper, dulling the glossy surface. Brush off the dust. Brush on a second varnish layer. Let it dry for a full day. Re-install the doors.
