The Basin and WC Combination Unit Buyers" Guide

103 9
When you first started thinking about bathroom furniture for your bathroom makeover, you may not have realised that basin and WC combination units even existed.
Designed to maximise your use of space, they're useful in any bathroom, but almost essential in a small space.
As the name suggests, a combination unit is a piece of bathroom furniture which combines a WC unit and a basin unit with integrated cupboard, drawer or open shelf space.
This type of furniture minimises the gap between a standard toilet and basin and turns every bit of space there to your advantage.
Combination units can be wall mounted for an illusion of increased floor space, or floor standing for a more traditional effect.
They can be rectangular or L shaped, the basin section can be bow-fronted, and additional storage cupboards can be included which varies the shape as well as the storage space available.
They can come as a single piece which can often be left or right handed to suit your individual requirements, or they can be supplied in sections for universal suitability.
While you're focussing on size, think about the depth of your unit: if your bathroom's narrow, slimline units will hug close to the walls, maximising your available floor space.
If the room feels a little tight, you could try adding pieces of bathroom furniture such as mirrored cabinets which reflect the light and add an extra dimension to your space.
If your bathroom's larger, space is less of an issue and a standard depth unit can increase the amount of storage available to you.
If you're considering a bathroom furniture combination unit, you're probably doing so - at least in part - because of their storage capacity, which can come in the form of open shelving, cupboards, or drawers.
Do you have a number of daily use or decorative items that would benefit from being on show, or are you a bulk buyer who needs a large, closed cupboard to hide away multipacks of toilet rolls and two for one offers on shampoo and bath foam? If you need to store a number of smaller items, drawers can be helpful: they're easier to keep organised and so you should be able to locate small items quickly and easily.
Use small boxes or baskets as dividers within a drawer to separate your storage still further.
Think too about the look you'd like to go for.
Size is all too often dictated by the constraints of your bathroom, but style is your own free choice.
Do you prefer the subtlety of an inset basin or the drama of an on-show countertop piece? Would you like the natural tones of a wooden bathroom, the minimalism of high gloss monochrome, or a riot of colour? Are your bathroom furniture tastes traditional or contemporary? Weigh up all your options, shop around, and pick a unit that you love straight away: good quality bathroom furniture, looked after properly, can last many years.
You don't want your bathroom's appeal to fade away before the units themselves have begun to wear.
