For drawing beginners, pencils are the tools of choice. They are simple to use, and they are also correctable. As you already know, pencils come in a variety of hardnesses. The hardest tip is indicated by the letter H, and the softest by the letter B. You can see that letter labeled at the end of the pencil.
Mechanical pencils are fine tools used for architectural drawing and drafting. The best part about these pencils is that they don't need sharpening. They maintain a fine, but variable line. The pencil leads are available in different gauges, the 0.5, being the finest. The pencil barrels are not labeled, but you can distinguish each gauge by color code them yourself. For example you will know that the red pencils have 0.5 HB leads, the black ones 0.5 B and so on. The price of one pencil barrel is about $ 1.50, so you must pay attention when choosing them. For a nice range of tonal color try to acquire at least 2H, H, HB, B and 2B.
Another important tool you need when you start drawing is the eraser. A kneaded eraser can be worked into small points and can be kept clean by folding them for a new surface. Another good thing about these erasers is that they don't scratch the paper surface.
If you want to experiment you can try charcoal, conte crayons or charcoal pencils, as they come in a large range of tones and textures. At first, you can begin with the medium. Later on you can draw you attention towards ink, ink-pens, brushes, or water-soluble pencils too.
If you don't want to use the stiff back of drawing pad or sketchbook you can use a drawing board. They are useful because you can hold it on your lap as you work, with the paper taped at a good working height. If you will use a board, keep in mind that it must be larger than your drawing paper.
