In the past decade, with the rapid development of the internet age, phrases like "digital media" and "social networking" have taken on entirely new meanings.
With the popularization of online social media sites, internet-surfing citizens of the world can now communicate, organize, share information and even protest on a whole new level.
These developments in digital social media are largely because of the surge in the amount of technological devices that are available to mass consumer groups.
As recently as the 1990's, the average family was lucky to own one computer in the house, and mobile phones were more likely to fit in a pant leg than inside someone's back pocket.
Today, the average consumer has many more choices than that.
You don't need a digital media degree to buy a laptop or a net-book.
Instead of lugging around books in your bag, you can fit dozens of books inside a slim e-book reader with a digital screen.
You can choose from a myriad of pocket-sized smart-phones that contain cameras, mp3 storage, internet-access and more.
Most remarkably however, the innovative trend of social media sites have emerged from the abyss of this web-based jungle, and the way that people of the world have latched onto them, it looks like they are here to revolutionize the use of digital media developments forever.
When a lowly Harvard undergraduate developed a school-wide website where users could create their own online profiles, complete with photos, he had no idea that what he had created would blow up into Facebook, a social networking sensation.
Now, Facebook users all over the planet create their own profiles and collect myriads of Facebook "friends" who can view their profiles, comment on photos and post links on each others' pages.
This usage of digital media means allows people to connect with friends and relatives who they might otherwise talk with much less frequently.
In many ways, it has revolutionized the terms on which people communicate and socialize in the modern world.
Twitter followed in the monumental footsteps of Facebook by establishing itself as a social networking site focused more on instant updates and gratification for its users.
Twitter users create profile pages (that lack photos), and then proceed to "tweet" short updates in less than 200 characters.
However, Twitter-ers can also post links to articles, photos, videos, music and more on their pages, as well as tweet directly at other users, allowing people to engage in social dialogue on the site.
Since its conception, the site's rapidly-updated feeds have been responsible for flash protests, social outcries and the deliverance of highly-anticipated world news.
At a digital media college, students learn about both the technology itself, and the web content which can only exist by means of this technology.
It is safe to say that the phenomenon of social media sites are a direct product of developments in the innovative field of digital media.
