Ethiopia"s Kenenisa Bekele and Sileshi Sihine Take Gold and Silver in 10,000m
It must be something in the water of Ethiopia's Oromai's region. It's where Tirunesh Dibaba Kenene, the winner of the women's 10,000m gold, is from. It's also where Ethiopia's Kenenisa Bekele and Sileshi Sihine are from. Bekele won gold, repeating his feat in Athens four years ago, Sihine won silver, same as in Athens, in the 10,000 on Aug. 17.
At The Age's Len Johnson put it, "How do you beat Kenenisa Bekele at 10,000 metres?
The great Ethiopian runner effortlessly won his second consecutive Olympic title in Olympic record time last night, breaking his own record from Athens four years ago. One year before his first Olympic gold medal, Bekele won his first world championships. Between the two championships, he set his first world record at 10,000, removing Haile Gebrselassie's name from that distance. Before the 2005 world championships he broke the record again; then he won in Helsinki, in Osaka last year and now again, here in Beijing."
Bekele clocked in at 27:01.17, Sihine finished in 27:02.77, with Micah Kogo of Kenya taking bronze with a time of 27:04.11.
