Choosing the Right Access Panel

You might not realise this, but your home does have access panels. It's not something you notice outright, especially since most people don't really "see" these anyway. It's expected, since the access panel is pretty much the ninja of the construction world. You're really not supposed to notice it.

The only thing that might be of concern is when the time comes that you, as homeowner will need to change or install an access panel. What would you do then? It's easy to say that you'll get experts or professionals to do it for you, but really, you'll just be throwing away money in doing so.

This is because installing access panels is one of the easiest things to do. You don't have to deal with too many steps, and it's one of the easiest DIY projects in the world. Even the most inept homeowner should be able to handle the project without any hassles. The only thing you have to do is do a bit of prior research so you know what steps to take.

Of course, there's also the matter of selecting the right material for your panel. This is one thing that you need to decide on your own, since not everyone will have the same standards or requirements. For example, what might work for your friend's home won't necessarily work for you.

This is because different finishes have different needs, and some homes or areas of the home really have specific requirements. As such, choosing the right material becomes very important. You don't want to accidentally use the wrong material and then regret your choice later on.

There are three main materials used for access panels. The heaviest and most expensive is the metal panel. It is undoubtedly the most durable, but it's not always the best choice. This is because it tends to be really quite hefty and isn't always suitable for your needs. Also, metal panels are really expensive.

For plumbing-related needs, you'd be best served by plastic panels. This is because plastic is waterproof and is really the best option when you have an area that's constantly exposed to water. In the bathroom and the toilet, therefore, plastic is the best option. The problem with plastic is that it isn't as durable as the other options. On the plus side, it definitely is the most affordable.

Lastly, there is plasterboard. When you get plasterboard access panels, you pretty much get the most versatile option. This is because plasterboard is a material that's easy to work with, and you can cut and reshape it as needed to suit your needs. It is also very durable yet is cheaper than metal panels. A plasterboard access panel is definitely going to be useful for a lot of things.

One more advantage offered by plasterboard access panels: you can plaster and paint it according to your aesthetic needs. If you want your panel to match the rest of your wall, just paint it to do so. It's very easy to make your panel "disappear" and blend in when you use plasterboard.
