When measuring for a garage door it is important to remember that most doors require some sort of frame to attach to.
Another point to make is that the ordering sizes required by manufacturers can differ from each other.
The manufacturer will ask for numerous measurements consisting of the following; - You will need to provide the width and height of the existing brickwork.
- The internal headroom available from the underside of the lintel going upwards to the nearest obstruction.
- The available space on the internal reveals.
How to Measure Sectional Garage Doors Most sectional garage doors are fitted behind the reveal (on the internal face of the brickwork).
This is to allow the full drive through width of the garage opening.
Most domestic doors require in the region of 100mm of side room on both sides.
Double check with the manufacturer you have selected before purchasing.
Some manufacturers such as Gliderol have available a between the reveal kit.
This is an additional extra that if you wanted to avoid paying for this, you can add timber posts to create the side room that is required.
The hardware for the sectional garage doors come into the garage space, so it essential that there is room available for the horizontal tracks.
You will require between 350-600mm from the front of the garage to the rear.
When ordering this type of door, give the structural opening and other measurements in metric.
More information about installing a sectional garage door can be found on many garage door or manufacturers websites.
How to Measure Roller Shutter Garage Doors This type of door varies a lot between manufacturers.
Some require the structural opening, other require the overall width and height.
Always double check before placing an order.
Modern roller shutter garage doors still require side room for the guides to attach to, especially in the case of the steel single skin roller door.
The insulated roller door can be installed behind the reveal, between the reveal or on the external face.
The roller door curtain is supported by brackets that are bolted to the side and above the opening.
When the door curtain opens it rolls into a roll above the lintel area.
The average curtain roll for a domestic property is between 325-450mm.
It is required to go behind the lintel area to allow virtually the full use of the drive through height.
All roller doors will hang down when opened by approx 45-55mm.
This is as standard.
More information about installing a roller door can be found online.
When measuring the opening, measure across the top, middle and the bottom to check for any variation.
With the height, measure the left, centre and right side of the opening and take the smallest measurement each time.
The headroom is quite a key factor to have to take into consideration.
If there is limited headroom available then many door types will be unsuitable and potentially ruled out before you have started looking.
In the case that there is little or no side room available, the opening can be reduced by installing timber posts.
An alternative available with the insulated roller door is that this door can be fit between the reveal.
This allows the guides to be attached to the outer walls rather than behind the reveal.
All measurements should be provided in metric to give the most accurate information.
