    Learn the Culture

    • If you are traveling to a foreign country, or even to a different region of the United States, make sure you do some research about etiquette in your destination. Every culture has its own rules of politeness. You should find out if you are expected to provide your hosts with a gift. Proper dress is always important, but varies by region. Make sure you bring the right clothes. In some cultures you are expected to be very direct with your communication. This is especially true of the United States. But in many other cultures, the expectation is that you will be indirect, and extremely conscious of the feelings of others. There are many areas you can go wrong in, but there are also many ways you can impress your hosts or guests. Research the rules of politeness in your destination before you go.

    Stay Comfortable and Collected

    • When you will be traveling for many hours, make sure to dress comfortably. When you reach your destination you can change into more formal clothing. If you are stuck on a plane for many hours in uncomfortable clothing, you may find yourself more tired and frustrated. This may result in your becoming irritable and showing poor social judgment. You want to be as clear-headed and ready to communicate as possible to make the best impression you can. Also, make sure to get plenty of rest before the trip.

    Be Punctual

    • Make sure to plan your travel so that you have plenty of time to make your flight or train, and to get from the airport or train station to your destination. Always give yourself extra time. Arrive a little bit early. Some cultures are less concerned with punctuality, but others demand that you be exactly on time. Make sure you meet the standards of your host country. In return, don't expect people who belong to a culture that values a slower pace of life to suddenly speed up just for you.

    Respect Airport Security Regulations

    • This is an overlooked way to exercise good etiquette. When you are in an airport follow all the security regulations, and don't argue with the security staff. While this is true while flying within the United States, it is even more true when you are visiting another country. Especially in areas that have high security due to conflicts or terrorism, you want to be very respectful to the security staff. Even if you become irritated, never allow yourself to show your irritation. You just might find yourself detained long enough to miss your flight.
