How to Remove the Console in a 1969 GTO
- 1). Remove the shifter bezel if the vehicle has an automatic transmission. The shifter bezel is the chrome piece that surrounds the shifter stick and gear identification letters. Gently pry up on the bezel with the flat-head screwdriver. Avoid scratching the wood of the console.
- 2). Open the arm rest of the console and locate the two bolts holding the console in place. Remove the two bolts and place them to the side of your work area.
- 3). Locate the front of the console that sits directly under the dashboard of the vehicle. Remove the screws holding the console to the floor pan. Set the screws with the bolts from the arm section of the console.
- 4). Shift the gear shifter to second gear if the GTO has a manual transmission. If your GTO is an automatic, unscrew the shifter handle by firmly turning counter-clockwise. By performing one of these actions, you can create more clearance for the console when it is lifted.
- 5). Lift the console upward and backward to clear the shifter stick and the underside of the GTO's dashboard.
