Stay and Stay In

• 1). Teach your puppy some rudimentary obedience commands, especially "stay." This can be done by facing the dog and placing your hand, palm forward, toward the pooch and uttering the word "stay." When your puppy does not move, he or she is rewarded with a treat.
  
  
• 2). Keep your puppy on a leash and open the door. When he or she lunges to go outside, say the words "stay in." If your puppy does make it out the door, sternly tell him or her "no" and repeat the phrase "stay in."
  
  
• 3). When the puppy finally listens and obeys the "stay in" command, reward him or her with a treat and praise.
  
  
• 4). Once the puppy is capable of staying inside when commanded, open the door and walk out a few steps, repeating the phrase "stay in," all the while leaving your puppy alone at the front door.
  
  
• 5). Advance away from the door a few more steps if your puppy stays put when first told. Once again, reward good behavior with a treat.
  
  
• 6). Add other people to the mix as a distraction to teach your puppy to wait at the door when you have guests. Ask a friend or family member to walk into the door as you tell your puppy "stay in."
  
  

Longer Leash and Come

• 1). Keep your puppy tethered to your waist with a longer leash, around 10-20 feet in length.
  
  
• 2). Allow your puppy to roam around the front of your home, and when he or she ventures too far away, tell him or her "come."
  
  
• 3). Walk back into the house and repeat "come." This will teach your puppy he or she has boundaries, and those boundaries include not going outside the front door.
