How to Check Mutual Fund Prices

    • 1). Get the ticker symbol for the mutual fund. Morningstar offers the most coverage of mutual funds and is the best place to find ticker symbols, though Yahoo! Finance and Google Finance are also effective (See Resources). Use the search function to find the ticker by typing in the name of the fund. If you do not know the exact name of the fund, typing in the fund family, like Vanguard or Fidelity, will help you identify the ticker.

    • 2). Enter the ticker symbol into the "quote" search function to find the price of the mutual fund. The price will be listed as the "NAV."

    • 3). Compare the performance of the fund to market benchmarks. Important metrics for comparison are the performance of the industry sector of the mutual fund and the performance of the S&P 500. The default mutual fund quote page on Morningstar displays the performance of your chosen mutual fund along with sector and S&P 500 performance on a chart.
