Choose Your Name (No. 2 in a series)
The nickname of a home state or city is used by many people as a username. Quick quiz: Identify these states - Sunshine, Peach, Aloha, Hoosier, Hawkeye, Tar-Heel, and Buckeye. Easy! Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Indiana, Iowa, North Carolina, and Ohio. I went to the University of Wisconsin so I am a Badger
If you're from Hawaii, you know that a shaka is a greeting gesture ("hang loose") with the thumb and little finger raised. It's become so popular that you may have to add one or more numbers to your alias.
Closer to home is your city. Well known names include Beantown (Boston), Big Apple (New York City), La-La Land (Los Angeles), Motown (Detroit), Sin City (Las Vegas), Tinseltown (Los Angeles), and Windy City (Chicago).
President Lyndon Johnson's two daughters have taken different name routes. The older daughter, Lynda Bird Johnson Robb, is married to Charles S. Robb. Her sister, Luci Baines Johnson, has retained her name, though married to Ian J. Turpin. President Bill Clinton's daughter, Chelsea, is expected to marry Marc Mezvinsky this summer. Any bets about her name?
Does your spouse or girl (boy) friend have a special endearing or humorous name for you? Not just Dave, cutie, brawling, honey, honey bunny, love, or sweetie but something unique. I have a sobriquet for my wife but I won't reveal it because she sometimes uses it as an identifier on her anonymous postings.
A clever blogger identifier or pseudonym is an acronym, which is a word formed from the first letters of several words. Of course, you know that radar, one of the most famous acronyms, refers to radio detecting and ranging. Acronyms, some of them amusing, often are used in vanity license plates.
Many people use their nicknames on vanity license plates, particularly physicians (Bones, IDoc). Remember the Seinfeld show in which a proctologist used Assman on his license plate! I have a friend who is an orthopedist and his username is backaid.
Adding oo can make a name unique and memorable. Three of my favorite words are oodles, which means a great amount, as in oodles of love; ooh, which expresses surprise or great pleasure, and, of course, Google.
An animal can be a great username, particularly since many have familiar connotations, such as elephant (memory), lion (strong or courage), rabbit (fast) and whale (big). You may want to stay away from cow, shark, snake, and wolf. The world's most famous golfer did well with an animal name. Perhaps a flower or tree would be more endearing, such as oak, pine, rose, and tulip.
In the 14th century, an ekename was an additional name; what we now call a nickname.
Contenders for first names with the most nicknames include Margaret (Greta, Madge, Marge, Margie, Megan, Peg, Peggy, and more) and Robert (Bob, Bobby, Rob, Robbie, and Bert). Nicknames for my first name, Richard, include Dick, Dickie, Rich, Richie, Rick, Rik, and Ricky. My wife's nickname is Chick. No kidding. We sometimes use a unique username chickanddick. The secret is out! I'll have more endearing secrets for choosing a name in my next article.
