Fish - How to Keep Your Fish Happy and Healthy
If you have a fish it means that you are committed to caring for it, and now that you're reading this article means that you are more committed than 55% percent of people that buy fish.
It's good to keep your fish entertained.
I would recommend buying ornaments so that your fish feels safe and if they have something to swim through or around it makes the space feel bigger to them.
When a fish has somewhere to hide, it makes it feel less open and thus makes it happier.
Also it would be good to buy artificial plants.
The plants to the fish are like the furniture in your home, it doesn't feel complete without it.
When feeding your fish it is important not to over-feed it.
A good amount would be a pinch or two.
If you over-feed your fish it contributes to the water quality.
The reason overfeeding is an issue is because the more the fish eat the more waste they produce, and not to mention the food that gets past them.
This causes bad water quality which can cause diseases such as high nitrates, ammonia, and other diseases that can be unhealthy for your fish.
As far as cleaning goes I would recommend a monthly cleaning.
By cleaning I mean emptying out 4/5 of the water, take everything out and thoroughly cleaning them.
If you have decoration rocks at the bottom (which I would recommend), make sure to take those out and clean them.
If you see a lot of waste or food at the bottom get that out.
It's good to check the filter everyday.
If the filter's not clean nothing else you do will matter, you can clean the tank as much as you want, but without a clean filter the tank will be dirty within days.
Also its good to have ornaments, but don't over crowd the tank.
The main point of having a fish is for decoration, an eye catcher if you will.
So you don't want to have it where you barely ever see the fish.
To summarize this all up I would say don't over-feed your fish; have some, but not too many, ornaments; clean you fish tank weekly and always check the filter system; and never mix aggressive fish with community fish or tropical fish with goldfish, goldfish are very dirty fish and almost all other fish would die with the unhealthy amount of waste that only other goldfish could live with.
