Kate Loses the Cuffs
Kate drives the taxi to an auto repair shop and points a gun at the man working there. "Where's your tire hammer?"

He stops working and looks at her handcuffs. "You've got a problem."

"So do you. Where's your tire hammer?"

"The tire hammer will just cut off your wrist. Your problem is you need a punch press and you're not going to be able to use one of those and keep that gun pointed at me."

"You volunteering?"

"I've got steady hands, but I kind of feel like we got off on the wrong foot."

"I'll give you $200."

He gets the handcuffs off and she says thanks.

"So why the bracelets?"

"I'm wanted for murder."

"Murder?"

"You don't happen to know somewhere I can change, do you?"

"Bathroom's over there. Make it quick."

She takes Claire's bag into the bathroom and takes off her jacket. She opens the bag to find a picture of pregnant Claire inside. The bag is full of stuff for the baby, including a stuffed whale. Kate looks ready to cry.

The Test
Kate packs a backpack and Aldo says, "You better not slow us down."

"You better not slow me down," she says.

"I'd go with you," Jack says, "but--"

"But, Sawyer would kill you?" Kate says.

He laughs.

"I'll take care of James," she says. "You take care of Sayid."

"Deal," he says.

She starts to walk away and says goodbye. He pulls her close and says, "Be careful."

Inside a room, Sayid is shackled to a table. "What is it that you want?" Sayid asks the Japanese man. "Please, whatever you're thinking of doing--"

The Japanese man opens a can that has ash in it and blows some over Sayid's bare chest. He studies the ash.

"What is that?" Sayid asks.

The Japanese man connects wires to Sayid and then cranks a wheel. He flips a switch and there is electronic buzzing and a light goes on. He turns a dial and Sayid begins writhing in pain. The Japanese man turns off the machine and takes off the wires.

"Why?" Sayid asks. "Why are you doing this?"

The Japanese man pulls a red hot poker from the fire.

"I don't have any secrets," Sayid says.

The Japanese man puts the poker on Sayid's chest while he screams. He speaks Japanese to the tall man. The tall man steps in with two other men and says, "We're sorry we had to put you through that. It was a test. We had to be sure."

"Test to be sure of what?" Sayid asks.

"Don't worry," the tall man says. "You passed."

They get him off the table and the other men take him out. The tall man says to the Japanese man, "I just lied to him, didn't I?"

"Yes," the Japanese man says.

Claire's Stuff
Kate drives the taxi back to where she'd let Claire out. Claire is sitting on a bench. Kate gets out and says, "Where were you going?"

"What?"

"Before I got in the cab, where were you going?"

"Why? So you can high jack them too?"

Kate gets Claire's things from the trunk.

"I'm waiting for a bus," Claire says.

"I came to bring you your stuff." Kate hands it to her.

Claire looks through it and Kate says, "Relax, I didn't take your money."

"Well, uh, gee, thanks," Claire says.

"So where were you going?"

"Don't worry about it," Claire says. She puts her bags over her shoulder and starts to walk away.

"Fine," Kate says and shuts the trunk.

"Langdon street. Brentwood."

"You got family there?"

"Uh, no. It's the couple who's adopting my baby. They were meant to meet me at the airport. I guess they got their days mixed up or something. It's not like they abandoned me."

"Brentwood's not far. Get in."

"Seriously?"

"You want a ride or not?"

Claire looks unsure and then gets in.

Kate's Escape
As they walk through the jungle, Kate asks Aldo, "So why do you people want to keep us at the The Temple?"

"We're protecting you," he says.

"From what?"

"You've been on this island awhile, right? Ever seen a pillar of black smoke that makes a ticka-ticka sound, looks pissed off?"

"Yes," she says.

"From that," he says.

Jin says, "Do you know anything about another plane coming in? An Ajira flight."

"I'm sorry, is this a press conference?" Aldo asks.

The other man who is with them says, "I think he means the one that landed--"

"Justin, shut up!" Aldo says.

They continue walking, but Kate stops and says, "No, no, that's a decoy trail. He went this way."

"And you're basing that on what?" Aldo says.

"Experience," she says.

"Aldo," Justin says.

"What?" Aldo says.

"I think she's right."

"Of course she is," Aldo says. "After you, princess."

They continue on and Aldo asks Kate, "So what's your strategy for bringing your boyfriend back? I hope you got one, because he shot a guy on his way out. If he tries that on me I'm going to blow his head off."

Kate takes a drink and Justin stops her and says, "Whoa! Watch it." There is a trip wire on the ground.

"Thank you," Kate says. They look up to see a net full of rocks.

"It looks like it's one of Rousseau's traps," Jin says.

"The French woman?" Justin says. "She's been dead for years. This couldn't be one of--"

"Justin," Aldo says, "shut up!"

Kate shoves a canteen into Aldo's chest. "What was he going to say?"

"You don't even remember me, do you? You don't recognize me. Well maybe this will jog your memory. Three years ago you staged yourself a little prison break. And you did it by knocking the guard out with the butt of your rifle. That would be me."

Kate hits him with the canteen and then throws the canteen on the trip wire. The net full of rocks swings down and hits Justin. Kate takes a pistol and a rifle and Jin asks what she's doing.

"Escaping," she says.
