    Finding the Wood

    • Pick a piece of wood from a dead tree that is not damaged or rotting. It is best if it hasn't touched the ground and had moisture seep in. You want your piece of wood to be at least 55 inches long and at least 1 1/2 inches wide and feel comfortable in your hand. Don't select a piece that is too thick or too thin.

    Cutting Your Stick

    • Cut your wood to size. A good rule of thumb is that your stick should be at least 6 inches higher than your elbow when standing straight up from the ground. Carefully whittle all the bark off your stick. Carve a head or designs into your stick to personalize it.

    The Finishing Touches

    • Sandpaper your stick down so that it is smooth. You can add protective varnish to your walking stick or paint your stick to add flair. If you use varnish or paint, make sure to leave ample time for the stick to dry (at least a week).

    Enjoying Your Stick

    • Take your stick out on a hike. If it gets wet on the hike, make sure to let your stick air dry and keep it clean.
