An Introduction to Sports in the "City of Champions
Pittsburgh is a sports town. Sports successes even inspired one of Pittsburgh’s nicknames -- “City of Champions.”
Locals take great pride in their three major teams -- the Steelers football team, the Penguins hockey team, and the Pirates baseball team. All three share the same team colors, black and gold.
Game after game, fans pack the stands in support of their teams. During away games, fans often gather at local sports bars or restaurants to watch their team with fellow supporters.
Pro tip: If you’re not a sports aficionado, the time during major games is a great opportunity to shop at the mall or the grocery store because the stores will be deserted.
In addition to its well-known football, hockey, and baseball teams, Pittsburgh is also home to a soccer club and a women’s football league.
Here’s an overview of each team, along with a look at their unique traditions and culture.
Pittsburgh Steelers Football
With six wins, the Steelers hold the record for most National Football League Super Bowl victories, earning the city the nickname of “Sixburgh.” The Steelers play at Heinz Field, located on Pittsburgh’s North Shore.
Fans wave gold “Terrible Towels” at games. The Steelers rally towel was the idea of former Steelers radio announcer and sports icon Myron Cope.
Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball
The Pirates stadium, PNC Park, neighbors Heinz Field on the North Shore. The Pirates franchise is making a comeback. In 2013, the Pirates earned their first winning season since 1992. Fans also refer to the Pirates as the Buccos or the Bucs, a play on the word buccaneer or pirate.
With a skyline view and a riverfront location, PNC Park is known as one of the most beautiful ballparks in America. Occasionally during the summer, fireworks are on display after the game, giving baseball fans a front-row view for the fireworks show.
For an extra bit of quirk and to pay homage to the pierogi, a favorite food in Pittsburgh, people dressed up as pierogies race around the field in between innings. You can root for Sauerkraut Saul, Cheese Chester, Jalapeno Hannah, Oliver Onion, Bacon Burt, or Potato Pete.
Pittsburgh Penguins Hockey
Winners of three Stanley Cup championships, the Pittsburgh Penguins hockey team plays at Consol Energy Center in the Uptown section of Pittsburgh. The team was founded in 1967.
The Penguins are so popular in Pittsburgh that during away playoff games, fans gather around a giant outdoor screen to root for the Penguins together.
Pittsburgh Riverhounds Soccer
The Riverhounds, also called the Hounds, play at Highmark Stadium in Station Square. The men’s professional soccer club was founded in 1999 after more than a decade without professional soccer in the city.
Pittsburgh Passion Football
Since its founding in 2002, the Pittsburgh Passion Women’s Football team team has won a national championship and four divisional championships.
