Osteoporosis is a disease wherein there is a high risk for bone fracture due to decrease in bone density.
Epidemiology shows that females are more vulnerable to osteoporosis than males.
Currently, there are over 10 million osteoporosis cases in the US.
A very important health care problem which is osteoporosis accounts to over 1.
5 million cases of fractures yearly.
Osteoporosis commonly happens when there is an abnormally high bone reabsorption and inability to produce sufficient new bone tissue.
Normally, an old bone is reabsorbed and a new bone is produced.
Production of a new bone is faster in younger age, especially in children, infants and adolescents.
Bone development is slower and leads to lesser density of bone tissues at around age thirty.
Later on, bone reabsorption happens when the production is excessive resulting in decrease of bone strength.
There are many factors that increase the development of this disease.
These are usually classified into modifiable and non-modifiable risk.
Non-modifiable risk factors are sex, race, body type, past family history and age.
As a rule of thumb, females are at higher risk than males, and older age than younger age.
Ectomorphs are generally more affected than endomorphs and mesomorphs.
Asians and Caucassians are usually more susceptible to the disease compared to other race.
Modifiable risk factors are sedentary lifestyles, cigarette smoking, low calcium diet and vitamin D levels in the body, and low estrogen hormone levels usually present in menopause women.
Eating foods rich in calcium like milk and other dairy products, as well as vitamin D intake is an inexpensive way of preventing osteoporosis.
Bone strength is usually maintained by the intake of calcium rich foods, while vitamin D is needed for reabsorption of bones.
To improve bone strength and density, exercises which require you to bear weight in your bones must be done.
Bone development generally depends on the stresses and forces that are imposed to them.
Drinking alcoholic beverages and smoking is one way of preventing osteoporosis.
