How to Write Citations for a Magazine Picture

    • 1). Cite a print magazine picture in MLA style. Start with the last name and first name of the "author" of the image, the title of the picture or a brief description in quotation marks, and what the image is (such as a photo or map). The rest of the citation should follow the MLA format for the source in which the picture is located--in this case, a magazine. Remember to use the correct punctuation between items of information.

      Example:

Last name, First name of picture author. "Title of Picture." Photograph. Last name, First name of article author. "Title of Article." Italicized Name of Magazine DD/Mo./YYYY format for date of publication: page number of the picture.

    • 2). Use MLA format for an online magazine image. If available, begin with last and first names of the image creator or the webpage author's name. As with a print image, put the image title or description in quotation marks, then a descriptive word of what the image is. Italicize the website title, then follow with the website publication date, the date you viewed the image, and the URL in angle brackets.

      Example:

Last name, First name of image creator. "Title of Image." Map. Italicized Web Site Title DD/Mo./YYYY Web site publication date. DD/Mo./YYYY image viewing date <Web site's complete url>.

    • 3). Cite a print magazine picture in APA style. The information included in the citation will depend on the picture. Is it a photo, a map, an advertisement? APA format differs greatly from MLA. Authors are listed by last name and initials. For images, such as of artwork, you may need to include the location of the work as well as the publication you found it in. If the picture is a map or chart, you need only italicize the name of the map or chart, name the form, the location of the publisher, the publisher, the year, and the medium (for example, "print"). See the links in References and Resources below for more-detailed examples.

      Example:

Italicized Name of Map or Chart. Form. Location of Publisher: Name of Publisher, YYYY year published. Medium.

    • 4). Use APA format for an online magazine image. Authors are listed by last name and initials, followed by their roles (in parentheses), the year the image was created (also in parentheses), the title of the work, the type of work (photo, map) in brackets, the date it was retrieved and the Web site from which it was retrieved.

      Example:

Author's Last Name, Initial. (Photographer). (YYYY year image was created). Title of Work [Photograph], Retrieved Month, Day, Year, from: URL address of Web site.
