When you are thinking about a kitchen remodel there are a lot of different aspects that must be considered.
You have to choose colors and textures that go together but you also must have a kitchen that is functional and easy to work in.
Some of the decisions that must be made include cabinetry, wall paints, flooring, and work tops.
The work tops you choose for your kitchen demand a lot of thinking because they are not easy to change.
If you choose a particular color for the walls and ceiling then, absolutely, you can alter it after a year or two.
But the cabinets and the work tops are generally something you live with.
You want to spend a lot of time making the decision because, believe me, you will never feel cozy in your kitchen if you do not like your work tops.
The same goes for your cabinets and your flooring.
There are four major styles of wood work tops to choose from.
The classic butcher block is the first type.
It is built by taking short pieces of wood and standing them up on end.
They are then glued together which allows the end pieces of wood to be the top of the work top.
This gives a very good cutting surface as the knife can actually cut a bit in to the surface which allows it to maintains its sharp edge.
The second type is known as the plank or wide face.
The boards are placed next to each other with the glued edges being adhered together.
A standard surface plate is made from boards which are 3" to 5" in width, but there are modern techniques which allow for a wider board.
These wide plank work plans are made up of boards which are 4" to 8" giving a more solid appearance.
The third construction method is to place the faces of the boards directly face to face which allows for the edges of the pieces to be shown on the work surface.
This is known as edge grain and permits the natural grain patterns of wood to be portrayed.
This is very common as you can readily count the grains in the wood and each one represents a year of growth for the tree.
Finally, the solid wood kitchen table can be a collection of the first three types.
It is very common to build the work top with the plank face and then around the edges use a butcher block look.
This gives a beautiful finished look to the piece.
